Magnesium cam cover corrosion

I have had two MB with mag cam covers. My current m104 has far less corrosion than my later model m111 but there are still signs of corrosion. Is there a solution to this problem other than buying a different car. Does someone make an re manufactured cam cover in a material other than magnesium?

It doesn't really matter if it has corrosion on it....thats just the very outermost layer of the metal....on the newer motors its under a plastic cover anyways, probably why they did not treat the metal as much.

I imaging you could remove it, sandblast or abrasive brush it, polish it, then clear coat or paint it with a temp resistant paint and then it would stay looking good. The old ones on the M103 M104 etc were just painted black.

The market is too small for an aftermarket cover. M104 covers are painted gray, the paint is starting to peal on one of mine. At some point it will get sand blasted and painted body color ( 702 Smoke Silver , a gold ish silver color )

Gerry, how did you get the rivets out without damaging the parts? What fasteners did you use to reinstall the parts?

I want to do that to one of the valve covers on my 500.

Thanks

They weren't rivets - just small Philips-head screws.

The M117 isn't nearly so intricate inside the valve cover as the M104 is, in terms of baffles, breathers, etc.
