Can you rewire the aux. fan to come on when you start the car ?

If so will it affect the a/c or do any other damage?

You can and no it will not hurt the a/c but it may reduce the life of the fan.
I am of the opinion that this type of stuff is a bandaid to a poorly performing a/c system.

I've often thought that it would be advantageous to wire in a manual switch to the aux fan so that you can turn it on or off at will or simply let it follow its predetermined path.

You can do both...

You can simply unplug the temp sensor in the head and it will run anytime the ignition is switched on. Plus, I made an adapter plug that allowed me to turn it on at will. However, Jim makes a good point. A properly operating system will operate the fan the way it was designed. If you want to "trick" it to work more, check out JimF's webpage and get or make one of his units. I have resigned myself to letting it work the way it was designed.....for now!

I agree with the Cap'n: why do you want to do this? The fan only helps engine cooling below a certain road speed when the system does not see enough moving air, and also helps the AC coils with heat exchange. Since you are not compaining about A/C function, do you have an apparent cooling system issue? Perhaps we can help with the problem instead of patching it over and wearing something else out.

It would be better not to run the fan while at speed.
I run Jim F's 'cool harness', and it works great in the stop&go when our weather is as hot as GA, especially since my AC is currently broken...

I think we're having more fun with this than the Augusta session. Hey boostaholic: tell us why you want to turn the fan on!

Cap'n, I bet that 135 was inside your black on black big car, right? I remember 105, but I think 135 is more Death Valley than Gawja.

Tests in a black car in Arizona on inside temp. ranged to 245F, just in case you wanted to know why you shouldn't leave anything like an old cassette lying around. They soften around 220F.

What's a cassette? Is that something like an 8 track??

245F?? Man that'll boil yur beer!! I keep an AC thermometer in my center vent and I've see it as high as 130F when the car has been sitting in the sun!!

I can see why Boostaholic would want to increase his fan time. Currently my fan system works when the coolant temp gets to 105c but does not function from the freon temperature switch on the dryer. As a result, my AC works fine at highway speeds (40F at the vent) but will go to 80F when stopped at idle.
There are aftermarket fans out there for one fourth the price of the OEM that do the same thing, move air. So, you can burn up your OEM fan then replace it or you can do like me.....wish for the Fablulous Fall!! I can hardly wait for those days when I can turn the economy heat to minimum and open that sunroof!!
