Homelink programming

This is for a 2008 ML350...I had an old garage door opener that worked with the mirror buttons. Just replaced the opener with a Liftmaster that has the latest homelink setup. I've searched this site and tried all the combinations of programming steps I can find, but nothing has worked.

-Press buttons 1&3 to clear existing programming...slow blinking yellow light changed to fast blink, as expected; worked.

-Press and release button 1, then press remote button; yellow light never changed; failed.

-Press and hold button 1 and remote button; yellow light never changed; failed

-Press door opener learn button, then press button 1 for 2 seconds for three cycles; yellow light never changed; failed.

Did I miss a step?

To program homelink, you press and hold both the homelink button and the opener button. The homelink light will blink slowly, then quickly when it is programmed. It can be a pain. Try swapping in a fresh battery into the opener remote, this makes it a lot easier.

You have the right technique for the door learning the homelink - just need to get the homelink programmed first.

Tried it, but no difference. Pressed and held both (mirror button and remote button) and the slow blinking yellow light never changed. It's as if the mirror button doesn't recognize the signal.

This is a brand-new remote control with a coin battery. Every time I press it, the door opens or closes reliably. Do I need to change the battery anyway?

How close are you holding the remote to the mirror? Closer is better.

You might have a compatibility problem. Is the new garage door "Security+ 2.0"? If so, it is not compatible with the older homelink setup in the 2008 ML. Here's the Liftmaster website on this topic: https://www.liftmaster.com/LiftMaster-Security-2-0-Garage-Door-Openers-HomeLi

That explained it

Thanks for the link, I had to re-read the instructions. The door opener company sold me a repeater kit, but I didn't realize how it worked. I was trying to use the Homelink-2 remote to program the mirror button.

Apparently, the repeater listens for the original Homelink signal from the cars mirror button and repeats it to the opener with a Homelink-2 signal.

When I used the remote that came with the repeater, everything worked. Now I have three remotes (mirror-button remote, Homelink-2 remote, and repeater remote). Thanks again for the help.

PS - I still had to do the last step with the openers learn button (press opener learn button, then press the mirror button twice within 30 seconds).
