At present I am hopeful that my dreadful soldering skills will improve!

Talk about chasing my tail.
This thread wasn't needed after all. Got round to trying to de-solder the joints for the pins on the sensor wire. My poofy soldering iron wasn't man enough for it so I took the wire and sensor to a shop I know that does electrical repairs. I explained about the resistance needing to be lower than one ohm etc and the bloke measured it. Nothing wrong! Just like taking the dog to the vets or your child to the doctor... ...great big WTF moment. Came back and used a different set of test leads and got the same result as the "doctor". Turns out the test leads I was using to begin with are ****. So I'm back to square one as I can't remember what was tested with those crappy leads and what wasn't. This is why I love electrickery. Lesson leaned (perhaps) => measure the resistance of the effing test leads before you start to make measurements. Permission to laugh is granted!
