It could be regional: Over here stick welding as a term is used as frequently as MMA.

As for stick welding on any Mercedes pressed steel chassis design I reckon you need to find someone who is patient. It can be done but most people would probably just grab a MIG welder with 0.6 to about 0.9mm diameter wire.

The structure at that point is rigid (well it is meant to be rigid when there's no rust) but it is all pretty thin stuff.

In my experience (of those areas that have been rusted) the metal really wants to evaporate when you go anywhere near it with any welding form of heat.

Tread carefully. You will undoubtedly end up with an effing big hole before you can get any new metal to stick to it.

No offensive here, just joking here about the image of trying to stick weld under a car in rusty metal covered in rubberized undercoating.
