When is the proper time to change the timing belt on my '85 190e? Currently, I have 125k mile. Does MB recommend a specific mileage limit? My car does rattle a bit during start-up and low rmp but other than that, (and a slight hesitation on heavy acceleration) it runs fine. Any suggestions?

Corey,
Mercedes doesn't use timing belts, but they do use chains that stretch. On the engine that is in your car the chain should be checked for stretch every 60k miles. The rattle you hear just might be the chain. Be sure to have the chain checked as soon as you can. |

Also remember to have the oiler update done by someone who has done this before!! The update will prevent the chain from prematurely wearing out again.

Please tell me more about the Oiler Update.
How does one know if it's been done on a 190E 2.3. ------------------ |

The oil spray nozzle for the timing chain was phased into production 7/86. You must remove the front cover on the engine to install the nozzle. A good technician knows what to look for when the valve cover is removed.
