My 85 300D has a A/C freon leak coming from the compressor shaft seal. An independent AC shop has given me a quote of $865.00 to replace both the compressor and the receiver/dryer. I am not suspect that they are trying to gig me since they first suggested that I pump the system up with freon and see how long it lasts before I invest the $$. The system had two pounds in it and was not cooling at all before I added an additional pound of freon to bring the system up to the three pound capacity. While it cooled very well for the first few days, the compessor is starting to cycle more and more frequently. My questions are: "Is $865 unreasonable? are there any other alternatives? How much (hours) labor is involved?

Thanks

G. Kimbrough
