w210 wagon hatch latch mechanisam?

Just bought another w210 wagon. Found that the rear hatch does not lock - lock the doors and you can open the hatch setting off the alarm.

Ok removed the rear trim from the hatch - for reference there are 4 plastic 2 piece rivets that need to be removed (2 per side), the bumpers that actuate the rear modesty panel release do NOT need to be removed, and the interior latch needs to be removed - one tiny philips screw removes the trim panel, then you can remove the two screws that hold the strap in place then the interior panel can be popped off.

Now the interior release can be removed via 1 philips screw under the handle. The lower hard plastic does not need to be removed.

Viewing what goes on in the mechanism, it will lock and unlock if I assist their movement, sprayed a bit of penetrating lube on the sliders and rotary pivot piece (lock) but still no great joy, in fact now when trying to lock, it moves a bit then starts to hiss like a leak. Anyway - any advise on the proper way to remove this assembly? Assume the vacuum fittings just pull out? Never serviced any of the vacuum system in the past.
Thanks
Paul

And this picture shows more of the area of interest - I believe the cylinder is the external lock/key cylinder which hooks into the mechanism - that is what I used to help the actuator from inside the car.

Wow, thanks for the detail! I can't offer help. I replaced a rear side door mechanism because of a leaky lock actuator. I had to replace the mechanism because I can't figure out how to swap actuators. It looks like the hatch actuator doesn't come off on its own either.

My issue is I have to pull the hatch quickly. If I pull slowly, it hangs and closing assist pulls it closed. And the inside release lever hangs loose. So thanks for showing me how to get there.

Still don't have the dam handle actuator out, but a bit more info.

Remove exterior plastic trim (license light piece) 2 screws from outside and 2 8mm nuts inside. Now handle actuator is loose, snap off the two actuator rods, and pull vacuum line. Create some more room by pulling the door latch (with close assist) 3 bolts from inside now pull the lower trim (I think it was 8 plastic pop out rivets) and remove the last 2 bolts, t2 electrical connectors and out it comes.

Dam latch is still stuck, can't (yet) find a way to get it past the metal.....

Anyone else done this??

Figured it out - what worked for me was sitting in the back with the hatch partially down, after everything is disconnected you can slide the handle to your right and get enough room to then move it down and out one of the large ports.

Reason for no lock was one of the vacuum actuators had a leak - fortunately I had bought one on speculation that it could be it (all of $15), well it worked. The actuators pop out the side, I pried on the latching tab on the old one and it came off easily.

Note that it is not necessary to remove the assist close latch, I did when I was looking for how to get everything out, not necessary.

Anyone know the part number for the small black/charcoal 2 piece rivets that hold the lower plastic in place? Was missing 2 and figure I should replace a few of the others as well.

Thanks
Paul
