My new (to me...) 300D needs, I was told, a change of bushings on the steering linkages. What I'd like to know:

- how hard a job is it to change those?
- do new/different bushings make a difference on driving feel and behaviour?, and related to this one...
- any particular type/grades (don't know what those things are classified as...) of bushings recommended?

Also, when taking right hand turns at moderate speeds, a low "thunk-thunk-thunk" noise comes from the right rear wheel. I know the shock absorber needs to be changed on that particular wheel, so I'm not sure if that might be causing the problem if it's a bearing problem.

Actually the thump thump may be as simple as the sway bar links. I have seen many fail!! It sounds like you need a front end rebuild...Leave this to your tech!

I AM ASSUMING YOU HAVE A 123 BODY 300D
NOT A 124

Most rear end "thumping" noises come from the C/V joints in the rear axle shafts.

Yes, I have a 123 body sedan.

The noise comes from the back, right hand side. Could it still be a front end problem?

I think the front-end rebuild refers to the steering column/ linkage problem you have...

Sorry for the delay, I just realized that there were more than 1 page of topics... stupid me!

Anyway, could a rear axle problem, I am guessing universal joint, be causing a noise when hitting bumps at moderate speeds? It sounds like some loose piece of metal hitting the underbody, but I can't see anything that could cause it and am starting to think either axle or suspension component problem.

Thanks all in advance.

Grab hold of the small plastic links that connect the sway bar to the lower control arm. Then shake it up and down, if it moves at all up and down it is faulty.
We will be offering parts in two weeks or less and can send them to your door!!

Thanks for the tips.

I had to get a flat fixed on the noisy wheel, so while the car was jacked up I checked the linkages:
- The plastic thing is well attached to the sway bar, but the whole thing did move a bit when I put pressure on it. Is this normal?
- I noticed that there is a bit (1/2 inch) of play in the right rear axle. Being on the side of the car, I could move the part between the two universal joints left and right, relative to the car, by that much. Is this normal?
- Finally, with the car on the ground, if I pull and push on the top of the tire, I hear the same noise as the one I hear while driving. This would indicate a bushings problem to me. Any idea pro or con?

Thanks for all the help

To close this topic: it was the sway bar link. Cost 20$ CAN and 45 minutes to change. Noise gone. Cool!

Thanks all

Nicolas
