Thanks for the info. I understand that there is another, smaller drain plug near the front of the pan that supposedly you get another quart out of when drained. I should be able to figure it out.

So Mercedes is using throw away drain plugs now?

Yep, plastic plug with rubber oring near filter cap - p/n is 002-990-20-17. Then you have another drain plug near the front of the engine oil pan.

Except for the fact that it is alive and well, my '81 300SD would turn over in its grave.

You wont want to look under a Ford truck then, the whole oil pan is made of plastic.

Look at the 725.0 trans pan and you’ll understand why waste is.

Exactly same as the ZF 8 spd boxes, good that aftermarket is now making those pans with removeable filters, dont know about the 9G tronic though.

And it does not end there, I am not brave enough to rebuild these units without replacing most or all of the aluminum bolts that go into magnesium/aluminum (housing) which are literally all the fasteners besides the valve body. I have seen people not replacing them, not using thread sealant and/or butchering them with impacts (which is much worse).

The filter elements and magnets are integrated to the plastic pan. (not sold separably by MB)

That is how ZF does it for the BMW transmissions.
