400E
Hello everyone! Been awhile since I've posted. Some might remember that at the beginning of the summer, my '89 300e was totaled. I have been looking for the right 400e or 560SEC. Think this may be it:
https://houston.craigslist.org/cto/d/galveston-1992-mercedes-benz-400e-w124/6970603375.html This car was for sale months ago and I talked to the owner who said the AC was the biggest unknown and that the sunroof was being stubborn whatever that means. I'm sure I can get it for $3500 or maybe less. Since I'll never have a 500e amg, this is the nearest thing and the W124 is by far my favorite. I have good experience with W124, but know little of the V8 in these or the transmissions. If someone can shed some light it would be great. The wiring harness was done in 2006 so no worries there. For Mercedes, this is my Holy Grail! Let me know what you think and we can chat. I may go look at it Wednesday and see how it is. |

fuel mileage, valve cover gaskets and mysterious parasitic draws. worked on a few and found the heat cooks seals and gaskets, make sure nothing is leaking now.
there's a black one i got for a parasitic draw and spent a week on it until the new owner threw in the towel and bought a battery maintainer. the car had suffered with that problem for as long as the previous owner had it. would LOVE to tear 1 apart and find the problem. the black lost it's life when a tree fell on it during charlie. |

at this mileage you might be looking at timing chain guides and check if there is delay when putting the transmission in reverse because I don't expect the tranny to be fresh after 182k and behind a V8.
400E have a throttle by wire and can go into limp mode because the wires inside the throttle body can go bad and also I think there is a bottom engine harness which can go bad A/C evaporator fails are not exactly uncommon on W124s. Dash out time. These cars have a 2.24 axle ratio so low rpm at speed I think $2k is a fair price for it |

Ok, many thanks guys. I think he says it has an exhaust leak and a leaking valve cover gasket. Also concerned that is hasnt been on the road or inspected since March, which means for some reason no one has been driving it.
I will keep it in the back of my mind. Also could be flood damaged from Harvey a few years back. Once again, thank you for your input! |

Both the 400E and the E420 used the same 4.2L M119 engine.

I might have missed it in your couple of posts, but were you looking for this 400E to be a daily driver or just a 2nd car?

I have a Volvo C70 as a daily driver so this would be more of a second car. I alternated between my 300e and Volvo when I had the 300e, so didn't put many miles on either one.
But I would drive it as much as possible. I would not be buying it as an investment even though Pierre Hedarry feels they will be going up in price like the 500E did. It would be a forever car though. What do you think of your 2 400Es' |

Sending you a PM.....and just for the record....go buy that 400E!
P.S. Gatorblue92 in his post didn't say anything about his 400E's, but that dude knows these cars cold. I'd PM him for his thoughts. Good guy.
