Replacing tie rods

I have a small hydrolic jack and two jack stands,where is the best place to put the jack stands to get the front end completly off the ground safely? [89 420sel] Is it a good idia to remove both front wheels?

Jack the car up by the factory jacking points just behind the front wheels. Get the car safely on the jack stands to secure the vehicle since you will likely have to do some hammering to remove the old tie rods. Removing the wheels is not necessary, but may help in accessability.
