Anyone R&R a Nippondenso A/C Clutch?
The A/C clutch on my 86 300 SDL has an open winding and needs R&R. My many manuals for this car has not provided any useful information. According to my W126, ACC manual, supplement "A", the compressor is a Nippondenso 10 cylinder.
I need to hear from someone who has BTDT to see if it can be done on the car and what special tools are needed. TIA Harry 86 300 SDL 65 300D Euro |

They tell me a hub puller is needed but, I've never had to use one. However you will need a pair of large, long tip 90 deg snap ring pliers to remove the snap ring holding the coil to the compressor.
Make sure on assembly that you set the gap properly, the shims are at the end of the shaft and some will get hung in the hub. Joe

There are 2 different types of this clutch. On some there is a 12mm wrench(socket) nut that secures the "follower" to the compressor: this type requires a special puller to remove.
The other type has a 10mm wrench(socket) bolt that can be removed without any special puller. On any of the clutches you will need a GOOD set of snap ring pliers.

Joe P and M.B. Doc
Thanks for your responses. A 12 mm socket fits the shaft nut, so I will need a puller (Auto Zone??) What has to be removed so this can be done on the car? There is less than 2 1/2 inches between the compressor and radiator. I noticed in my ACC manual that the Delta clutch came off in three pieces, a spring plate, pully and clutch coil. Will mine be the same? Where and how is the gap checked? Do you know the specs? Again TIA Harry |

Yes, the reman clutch has 3 parts! The air gap is 0.5mm OR .0.020".
You will need a special puller. At dealer we remove the radiator to access the clutch nut & to pull the follower off.

Thanks for the answers and I have two more questions. 1. Why do you call it a reman clutch and is that the way I need to order the replacement? 2. Like the Delco, will I need a special tool to push, for installation? Harry |

MB offers a rebuilt exchange A/C clutch for the OE compressor, MB part number 000-130-16-06(88) with a list price of $144.
The follower can be installed w/out using a tool in most cases.
