Unhappy Real frstrating problem is cleaning out my wallet better then B-12 Chemtool

94'C280 just went through the process of replacing the combo relay and switch due to wiper and turn signal working only when in the mood. 250+ bucks later and only three weeks later I now get a check engine light last night. So two days into this and while driving back form the mall turn signal and intermittent wipers both decide not to work.

Sigh, I'm not a long term MB fan and am learning but when I drive a cheap Mazda 626 for over 7 years with yadi-yadi many others with few minor electrical mech. problems it very frustrating to have a car that is turning into a problem child and cleaning out my wallet out at the same time. Yeah I'm also a type A guy; a 'driver' and get very impatient when these type of issues just keep cropping up. I'd like to enjoy my retirement and not have to spend it as a hobby on repairs.

OK I'm better now..........any ideas? besides the obvious like take it to my tech and let him 'figure it out'?

IF you got this far...thanks...if you got any ideas....hey thanks a lot!

Hi Leon!

You may want to check if your car has a problem with the engine harness...or, get a part time job.
It's just a joke! :p but, the engine harness is for real!

Did a search and........

1) Saw the DIY article about the EGR tube into the intake was carboned up. Cool, now what parts had to be removed to gain access? I did not readily spot it during my inital look-see.

Good to know that the Check Engine light is an emmision issue and w/84k mile this me be the source. Sure can't hurt to take a peek and reading the posts may be a good preventative step to take.

2) Now about the turn signal/wiper issue, the combo realy and switch was replaced within the last two-three weeks. Any ideas on this one?

My thanks for the help & humor..he-he.. can use both a a cold Corona w/ slice of lime in it.mmmmm.......

electrical

the only thing I know about electrics is "I don't know anything about electrics".

Sounds like replacement switch gear may be bad, or problem could be up or down stream and crapped out new switch.

Good luck,
Joel

If I had it to do over again.......

When my MB first exhibited it's negative behavior, I would have taken it to a verified "expert" and told him "find it, fix it and charge what you will". In my stupid quest to figure mine out, I have spent thousands of $$$$, hundreds of hours and am no closer to a "fix" than I ever was. Go ahead and take it to an expert, if you can find one! You can throw a LOT of money at one of these cars!!!

I hesitate to ask, but have you, our your service people checked the various ground leads? MB used a lot of two wire systems, and when the ground leads failed, the related systems would try to find a ground through each other, or not work at all. Also, since the combi-relay has multiple power outputs, I suspect wire splices, such as the one that failed in my heated winshield washers and killed the tach!

Good Idea

Since my MB tech just had the combo switch replaced about two weeks or so I'll talk to him about checking out the possiblity of a poor connection. He had to make sure he got his ace tech on it so that tells me that w/o the CD and even less MB experience I'm not willing to inflate the bag..he-he so thanks for the tip, I'll have him check it out.

Now if only I had a clue about how to get to the EGR and that intake line that gets carboned up I may even get the Check Engine light fixed too! :p

Leon - if you get to a point where you feel like you need someone else to look at your car, check out this thread. Steve Brotherton made mention of a shop in Houston.

Thanks for the link

I'll give Chuck Blair another go at the switch since his tech replaced it then if that's not getting anywhere I'll go to this site. I'm familiar with the location. Ah the internet so distant and yet so close:p !!!

You should definitely let your tech see what is the problem on the wipers. He should be happy to handle that for you. I would seriously seek an explanation for any charges.

If you look in my DIY article you can see a picture of the area that needs cleaning and a small paragraph on cleaning.

FWIW, I had a bad experience with Benz by Blair here in Houston and won't be going back. I too have been to MPH, on Steve's recommendation, and was pleased with Michael's attitude and extensive knowledge about my car. I will certainly go back to him for any repairs I need done, that I can't accomplish.

Good luck
