1998 E300 TD KEY Problem
I have a 1998 E300 TD. I do not drive it too much as I only have 30,000 on it. I have never used the second key for it and today when I decided to try it (it was sitting in some drawer in the house) I noticed that it didn't start the car. I called my local dealer who told me that a replacement key was $80. I find it strange that Mercedes would charge for a key which has never been used and defective. Was/Is this an issue with the E300 TD key? Any suggestions? Any information would sincerely be appreciated.

If you don't use one of the keys for a long time, they can come out of synch, with the rolling code algorithim not working properly. If memory serves, there is some way to remedy this without visiting the dealer. I just don't know it!! Sorry...
If that doesn't work, you may need a new key. And no, there is no issue with E300D keys. They are the standard MB key, not specific to the model at all...

If I remember correctly in the owners manual there is something about matching the key with the codes from the car after replacing the battery in the key - try finding that section and try it with your key. Verify that it has a good battery in it too.

Does the key open the doors and trunk? If so, the battery is probably OK. The sync process is supposed to be automatic. Just make sure your car is in Park when you try to start her...if she's not, no start. That's happened to me a time or two!

Thanks to all!
Thanks to all! It was the battery. The key itself didn't function at all.
