280 SL Auto Trans Question

Hi,
I am very new to Mercedes Benz but not to the mechanical arts(I am currently a Saab tech) I purchased a 1970 280 SL last week that had been sitting for 21 years in a heated garage. I had it towed about 20 miles to my shop and discovered that the towing company towed it with the rear wheels on the ground which was bad enough. Then I discovered that the trans cooling lines were off and the trans was pretty dry.
Since then I have pulled the entire driveline from fan to fuel tank and since the trans is on the floor should I just go ahead and rebuild it? Are the kits expensive? Are there manuals available?and finally what would I expect to pay for a good used transmission?
