Tried to unhook battery, thinking it would reset lock out but no good. what causes the red and green lights to flash on and off Many thanks , I have a 1996 SL 320

You have activated the anti-theft system. Mine did that once I think I had accidentally locked it from inside the car using the infrared key. When you try to start it the car thinks it's being stolen. You'll need to unlock it with the IR key THEN start it.

I am having the EXACT same problem with my 96 c220. I tried everything, including locking and unlocking from inside and outside the care with both the remote and the regular luck. I had to have the darn thing towed to the dealership which charged me $300 to reset the remotes and now it's still not working. Your guess is as good as mine.
