92' w124 wiper removal...not on CD
I'm needing to remove my mono wiper on my 1992 300D.
Its in bad need of a lude job "I hope". I cant seem to find any info on the shop CD.. any suggestions thanx Wayne

What the wiper doing??
You say you think its in need of a lube? Why?
I'm replacing my motor today. My wiper started moving very slowly and jerky...even at the highest setting. I removed the wiper assy , then removed the motor. It still would only slowly spin even at the high setting. It takes maybe 15 min to remove the entire assy. |

I've read the info on the post above from jsmith. That article and
several others that claim a good lube is often all that is needed.

Be careful when you put back the hex screws that hold the wiper assembly, if screw drops, it falls directly in the center water drain hole. During the last repair, I dropped 2 screws into the drain hole (it was cold in my garage and I was shaking) and it was impossible to take them out, I don't know where they are right now.

Wayne,
You say the CDs don't tell you how to remove the wiper assembly. They do; I just looked it up this weekend. They do NOT, as near as I can tell, tell you how to DISSASSEMBLE the unit. The instructions given in the link a few posts up are specific to a few models. Most monoblade wiper assemblies DON'T come apart with a couple well-placed dental pick probings. Mine, for example. It really needs to come off the car and be disassembled on the bench. I haven't tackled mine yet.

I am pretty oblivious about manipulating PDF files so couldn't figure out how to copy from the CD ROM to this list, but will paraphrase the instructions as best I can for removing the whole assembly from the vehicle: 1. Lift up the little cover over the bolt which holds the wiper blade to the shaft 2. Loosen the Allen bolt which holds the wiper arm on and remove the wiper arm 3. Remove 4 nuts which hold the wiper assembly in the car. 2 of these are right below the big black plastic case that covers the gear mechanism we're trying to get to; the other 2 are on the right (directions are as seen from the driver's seat) and in fact are the only nuts on the absolute furthest right part of the linkage 4. Remove a retaining clip, which is right below the center of the black plastic case 5. Disconnect the electrical connector for the motor 6. Remove the whole assembly from the car At this point the wiper motor can be removed as can the crank arm. The tightening torque for the nut on the motor shaft is 19 NM. Hope this helps.

To find the instructions on the disc:
Insert CD2, disc autoruns.
click on "accept" (terms agreement) click on "continue" select your car (300D 2.5 Turbo '92) click "continue" select "Chassis and Body manual" select "electrical system" select "82 Body" click on "more" arrow, you will move up numerically, you want to go to 0680, r&r wiper motor, click on the number 0680. If you go one more page, to 0760, that's the r&r linkage instructions also. Gilly

Lubed it good and works fine now
I ordered a motor(which I'm returning) but after reading about lubing the assy., decided to give that a try. Long story short that was definitely the ticket. Thanks again guys for sharing your collective knowledge. Any one with a W124 who hasn't lubed their, by all means should. Its preventative maintanence that'll have to be done sooner or later....

How did you access the innards? Did you figure out the secret for getting the case apart on the car or did you remove the whole assembly? If the latter, could you share the procedure with us please? Thanks.

It was a little tricky
The case doesn't come apart quite as explained in the instructions provided. I did remove the entire wiper assy.
Then I removed the wiper arm. Simply remove the plastic cover at the junction of the arm and the offending case. Remove the allen and gentle tap the wiper arm free. Remove the linkage that connect the motor to the assy. Turn the assy over and remove the 2 star screws. Now you have to pry the two halfs open.(like a clam) Be careful, not to bend the two halves. I pryed mine open about 3/8"to 7/16"MAX. Then I took some spray oil(Actually K&N Filter charger oil) and lubed the inside. Just find some high viscosity oil and lube the innards with it. If you have a large syringe (like the child med. dispensing type or the turkey injector type), you can fill it with some gear lube of some sort and squirt it on the offending shaft. Work the lube really well and also apply it externally to the shaft. Close everything back up and Voila' Last edited by aldedmon; 12-13-2002 at 10:28 AM. |

Thanks! That description really helps. I can see the star screws you're talking about with a dental mirror so will have to pull the unit and lube it up one of these weekends. Too bad the top of the case doesn't come completely off-- would be nice to be able to clean out the old lube.
