fuel distributor timing for an 83 240D

How do you set the timing? Is there a tool used to hold the gear from turning?

I'm not exactly sure I am understanding your question. Do a search on "start of delivery" and them come back and ask again. Are you installing a fuel injection pump that is out of the engine or are you checking the fuel injection pump "timing"?
There is no special tool for this application unless you consider the "drip tube" a special tube.

The inj pump on a 76 240D was pneumatically controlled. Did you use the manifolds from the early motor also? Is the vacuum line hooked up at the top/back of the pump?

I change over all fuel inj, from a 76 to a 83 manifold . Relocated the oil filter houseing. car runs good, starts fine. All that Im looking for is the proceeder to set timing (in timing) Walk me though as if the in pump was in my hand and the engine had been turn over with pump out. I hope this will help you understand what Im trying to get. Does this sound like something that you can help with? PLEASE.....
