I still cant find my engine number on my 83 240D--the machine shop needs it. I read on the driver side of the engine block, just below the top of the block 2nd/3rd cylinder 616-011-28-01, on the next line 83 B21, but I think that is the Casting Number. Mr. Benzmac suggested in my last post to check the Bell Housing, but pl dont laugh- I cant find the Bell Housing-dont know what it is. Can I get clearer instructions?

The bell housing is the area of the engine block that bolts directly to the transmission. It is approximately round in shape and in the center, or near it, is the back end of the crank shaft. If I were you, I would look around the periphery of the bell housing area for numbers stamped into the metal of the engine block.

Wouldn't that engine number be 616.912 ?
Or are you looking for another, more specific number? ------------------ '83 300D-T |

The engine number is found on the left rear side of the block, just below the left rear of the head. Spray a little carb cleaner to read it...
