Angry steering wheel noise

When I turn my wheel on my 90 300E I hear a scraping noise which appears to come from the other side of my steering column. Any ideas???????????

Not sure, but my old 1982 BMW 733i 3.3L I-6 4dr sedan also did this when the temperature was below 40 degrees. Very irritating.

ITS THE CONTACT RINGS FOR THE AIR BAG. YOU MAY SEE YOUR AIR BAG LIGHT COME ON AT THE SAME TIME. YOU CAN LUBE THEM, OR REPLACE THEM. I HAD TO REPLACE MINE BECAUSE THE SCRAPING SOUND CAME BACK AFTER THEY WERE LUBRICATED.
