Gilly, since I'm going to replace the subframe mount bushings anyway (my labor!), can I just take the subframe down to the MB shop and have them weld it on at that time? Seems like it would certainly be easier for the shop since it's already off? They may be more willing to do it too?!?!?

I don't know why not Mike, but it's not my call. It's certainly not mentioned in the work information. No reason I can think of why they wouldn't want to do it.
As an aside, MB does state that the work should be done by a professional welder. We do the inspection of the subframe in the shop. If there are no cracks, we order the gussetts, then set up an appointment at our body shop to have the work done. When the parts arrive, we take the car to the body shop, along with the parts and a paper copy of the work instructions and have one of their guys do it, someone with lots more experience with a welder. This can then be billed to the work order as a "sublet repair" under warranty.

Angry mercedes recall on defective subframes

I had this problem! Mercedes was reluctant to help! I had my local garage replace with mercedes subframe and then went after mercedes. My local dealer (wo had serviced my 450 sl 1977 earlier never mentioned that there was a recall. Crack found when car wouldt track properly, just shortof a catasthrophe!! When I put the pressure on, I gor recall notice in the mail (after the repair!) Finally got $700 from Mercedes. If they repair it, you wont get away without addittional $1000 plus! The mercedes dealer didnt know anything about the repair kit for welding subframe! (at least he said so) I wouldnt accept a welding job. Insist on a ew subframe. ( I could not tell the difference from the defective one and the replacement! No apparent reinforcement, etc. I have photos of defective fram, and am willing to answer any inquires. Abe G
