Do I need new ball joints on my W140

Had the S320 (1995) at the dealer the other day for an oil change. They said that the "Ball joints are starting to wear, and should be replaced".

What sypmtoms would/should be present if they are actually starting to wear, and how soon should I take care of this?

Also, is this a DIY job? Biggest thing I've done before is rear brakes and rotors...
