Quick Q: Pad/Caliper Compatibility?
85 300TDT
Is it recommended to use pads that are made by the same manufacturer as the calipers? Does it matter? ATE(Tevsi), Pagid, PBR, Textar...I dont think all of these guys make calipers (could be wrong). Just get a pad set made of desired comound and go with it? Looking at pads...many have different backs that contact the piston...cosmetic? Trivial? Heat sheilds different? Ok, it wasnt as quick and simple as I'd hoped. Thanks for your time. Alec.

ATE is the only one out of the group that makes calipers. As for pads, I personally prefer the Textar pads. Both Pagid and Textar are OEM suppliers.

Alec:
Ali posted some good info. Of the 4 brands you mentioned, 3 are OEM quality. I may stand corrected, but I do not think PBR is necessarily considered to be OEM. If so, that would not mean there's anything wrong with them. I've read that Textar's are quieter than Pagid and vice-versa. I've read that Jurid is better than Pagid and Pagid is better than Jurid and, and, and....... I had a problem with squeal awhile back with Textar. A local pro told me that his solution to squeal had always been to use dealer-only pads. I went to the local MB dealer and bought their pads and sure enough - no more squeal. I've been told that at any given time, Pagid, Jurid; Textar may be the provider to MB, so how come the dealer pads eliminated my squeal problem? I wish I knew. I used the same anti-squeal paste. Go figure. In the end, your choice of pads is sort of like your choice of oil brands. |

It's all a matter of personal preference or availibility. Mike, as for the Pagid/Textar/Jurid puzzle, Pagid and Textar are owned by a company called TMD Friction, who also owns Mintex. Jurid is the European division of Honeywell who also owns youknowwhat-dix. MB pabs can be made by a number of companies, since it all lies in supply and demand, I did brakes on my 420SEL, and the rear pads were Pagids with the MB shims glued on, the replacement ones were Textar with the same MB shim on it. But I was quite amazed whem I ordered a set of Textar pads with ATE rotors for the fronts, there was no MB shim on the replacement Textar pads, and the back, even though it had TEXTAR stamped in the same place as the OEM MB pads, there was a silicone "landing pad" for the piston.
