10,000 mile oil changes on new Jaguar?
My friend bought a new Jaguar and mentioned the convenience of long 10,000 mile interval oil changes. I was vaguely aware of the Mercedes FSS problem and suggested that more frequent changes would be better, but that if kept to the interval, use synthetic. We both have short commutes so by the time we pull into work, our engines have just barely reached full operating temperatures. I don't know if Jaguar requires synthetic or relies on typical dino oil for the 10,000 mile intervals.
Any thoughts or suggestions for her? .

my TDI manual aso suggests 10,000 mile intervals
The oil must be synthetic. I change mine every 5000 mi. just for cheap insurance.

Even though I feel synthetic oil is overkill for most water cooled applications, with 3500 mile change intervals, I am a long time user. I also push it to anyone who asks advice on the subject. However, if using Mobil 1 it is recommeded that the change intervals stay about the same as with Dino based oils and this varies greatly from car to car.
Below is an excerpt from the Mobil1 site. BTW: ran into a friend yesterday who mentioned that his wife brought her MB MLxxx to the dealer for an oil change. Said it cost $450....three filters etc. Is this the going rate? Oh, yes he mentioned that he received a $35 rebate coupon from Mercedes but it wasn't honored. Hmmmm From Mobil1.com... I have my letter from Mercedes for a 150,000 mile extended warrantee on the engine due to coaking problems using the FSS system on the 99 E300. The letter states that this is not a problem if you have used synthetic oils the entire time. I have always used synthetic and will continue to to so on the E300 and the 560SL. I would recommend using sythetics IF you intend to keep the car for the long run. If you trade in youru cars every three years shy bother. Unless you want to help the next owner.

Yes, all the problems related to the recent MB law suit were due to DINO oil. Using synthetic with the FSS intervals has not proven to be a problem.
That said, there is no way I would go 10,000 miles between changes regardless of oil used. Oil is cheap, cars are expensive. Have a great day,
