I would like to know what the purpose of the surround on the oe oil filters? If you look at the DIY section about oil changes, you can see the surround as the blue section on the replacement filter. I noticed that Purolator filters and other aftermarket filters don't have this surround. It surrounds the pleats. Thanks, Joe

I have never asked this to any of the engineers, I would think that it is to catch settlement as the oil sits and cools.
