Unhappy E420 Surging Badly

My 1994 E420 is surging badly. I replaced the fuel filter as a possible solution but that did not help. I need some guidance in what to check/replace next.

Thanks in advance!!!!

Ok, what are the conditions? Light accel? Hard accel? Idle? With a/c, without? Cold only? Hot only? In nuetral? In drive?

You get the point, more information and specifics please.

Lets see…..
It does it both when the a/c is on or off, whether the car is hot or cold, and in both drive and reverse.

Example: I approach a stop light/sign and come to a complete stop. The car almost dies (sometimes it does) then it revs up to 2k +/-

Example: I start the car put it in gear and it almost dies then revs as in my first example.

It does not do it when driving or accelerating.

Thanks for everyone’s input.

Allan

Is the CE light on? On many different cars I've seen, this is a sign of the Mas Airflow Sensor or Air Mass Meter going bad.

Since your car is OBD-I, I think it has the LED style code reader.

Much better. Take off the air cleaner and the air flow meter. Clean the fool out of the EA (throttle body) let it air dry and go drive it.

Joe,

Do you have any suggestions for "best" practices for cleaning EA (throttle body)? You mentioned removing the air mass, but do you use any specail cleaners to clean throttle body? Are there specail areas on the throtttle body that one should pay special attention too when attempting to clean?

Thanks for any suggestions?

Russell

So it would seem it is an 'idle state' problem.
Start by making sure none of the throttle linkage bits are sticking.

Car can be off for this test:
Actuate throttle linkage with hands at cable, and release very gently.
Make sure everything returns to full idle state, including the various plastic wheels and microswitches.
