atf

what's the difference between ATF and regular engine oil? The one in my transmission looks and spills like oil but is read. its reallly ok to swap a quart of regular oil for a quart of this to help a cold start tapping lifter? is there ever a time when you should NOT add atf?

Thanks,
CDT
