DIY lower Ball Joint Y/N ?

I have a 92 400SE (W140 S Class) that needs the front, lower ball joint replaced. After researching the problem, I’m still undecided if I want to tackle the job; or let a shop perform the work.

I would consider myself a good DIYer, but do you think I'm getting myself into a job that I should just leave to pros?

Russell

this job isn't to hard, the hardest part is removing the upper ball joint and the lower ball joint. The ball joint seperator forks work but they tend to bust open the rubber boot. I bought a ball joint seperator off JCwhitney.com that works without breaking the rubber pouch.

You will have to remove the spring and the whole 9. i was able to do the complete job in 2 hours for one side.

email me if you need more help 714guy@sbcglobal.net

I had a shop do a lower on my 190e last winter after it started squeaking. I have been thinking I need to do the lower on the opposite side as well.

How do you know when it should be done? Beyond sometimes squeaking, I heard they can sometimes just fail. Is there a way to clearly inspect w/o removal?

What is different about MB's that require so many ball joint replacements? I've noticed this for years and always wondered about it.

Unless it is my imagination they seem to fail more often than ball joints in other makes. Are they under more stress or load?

i'd say give your business to your favorite alignment shop, you'll need their services after replacing the joints, anyway!
