I am fixin' to change my ATF & filter. It will be my first time. I would like to be totally prepared before I start since I do not want to get part way through it and find that I am missing something.

From what I understand I will need:
ATF Fluid & filter
tools to remove both drain plugs & pan bolts
lint-free rags
drain pan

Am I missing anything? Do I need a torque wrench? What do I need to re-seal the pan?

Don't assume I know anything.....

I appreciate any input.

I just did my tranny fluid for the first time this weekend. It's just nuts and bolts really.

You'll need a torque wrench for the pan bolts and the drain plug. Also, expect to get tranny fluid in your face and hair.

Good Luck

I assume you are planning to also drain the torque converter and change its filter as well? I know that requires some lining up of the orifices to get to it properly. There are some good posts in the Tech Archives about it...I chose to have my tranny service done by my indep. mechanic anyhow.

Any recommendations on whether I should use synthetic ATF or not? I don't know what is in there or how to tell. Any risk using synthetic fluid?

Is there 1 filter or 2? I thought there was only 1 that is accessed by dropping the pan on the transmission.

I'm off to search the archives...

You will also need a good floor jack, a trained operator jack operator ( 1 minute of training required), a cordless phone, wheel chocks and either a good set of jack stands or ramps.

The jack stands/ramps and wheel chocks are self explanatory. The other equipment is just in case the one in a million accident happens. The trained jack operator calls 911 while they jack up the car that just slipped.

This is a very easy and safe job if you approach it correctly. It doesn't cost any more to do it safely and it is more fun to work on cars with a friend!

Good Luck!
