Wow! $9,000 is a lot of money to clean it up. What did you do to it?

1996 E300D: 140Kmiles with all the trimmings $9500 bought this via Craigs list in June of this year... awesome car in beautiful shape... no rust, no dings!

1984 300D Turbo only 57K miles (really!)... perfect (near show room) interior, no rust one dime sized ding on the rear fender, shiney paint, though a small pealing bit on rear pillar... $5000 off Craigs list last weekend.

My best deal

1987 190. 2 of them actually.

I bought a well-used, slightly rusting version to leave in DC when I went there for work. $500 for the car plus $250 for a new windshield. Nice running, no problems.

While in DC, I have a bumper fight with a change-my-mind while-I merge lady. Some grille damage to the 190, and the plastic cladding rubbing the tire on full turn. Cut that away, barely noticeable. Lent to a co-worker, and the rear windshield gets smashed at night. I replace in DC at a cost of $370.

$1120 into this car so far, right?

Turns out the glass has a bump in it, when the rear lid pops open (with some gusto) it hits the glass. My tech and I agree they put a bad piece of glass in. And my rear defroster isn't working anymore. I call the glass guy and he don't like these old jobs, too much labor he says, so he'll give me my money back if I bring him the glass back in one piece. (Sounds lousier than it should; he was a decent guy, said he could not guarantee a better piece of glass from his sources. )

Meanwhile, 190 #2 comes into my tech's shop, clean, unrusted, in need of an engine. I meet the guy, and offer him $250. He takes it. I swap my engine in, and gut the other one of everything. I sell the trans for $400, the engine block for $250, a seat and interior parts for $150, a couple lenses and relays for $50 and sell the rear glass back to the glass guy in DC for full price.

Cash back: $1220

Cash outlayed $1370

$$$ into car $150. And I have already swapped in the spare wiper motor which faded to black.

Of course, three days of my labor into the car.... don's ask my wife what she thinks of these "deals".

1994 E500

Just bought it over internet for $10,500. Has 178k miles and a lifetime of invoices for maintenance. Fellah spent $25k in last 7 years alone keeping it up.

Guess I'm pretty cheap..

72 280SE 4.5-$1900 in 1993, overhauled engine by myself, drove 400 miles then got totaled in 1994

82 240D-$450 in May 2007. Was not running when bought, had bad starter, will need engine overhaul in the future.

87 260E-$500 in July 2007. Engine caught fire during repair attempt due to leaky fuel distributor. Still need to locate various electrical parts that were damaged by fire.

79 450SEL-$400 two weeks ago. Also not running, will run now with new fuel pump. Car sat unused for five years, will need new tires, LH exhaust manifold, brake booster to be a driver. Hope to get done before winter in case the 240D won't start.

This leaves out countless Cadillacs, Lincolns, a couple Buicks, trucks, and a Packard...

Well I got my 1984 380 SE as a gift from one of my clients about a month ago. I have put a little money into it. It sat for two years on new rubber and a new Interstate battery, and started up on the first try on at least two year old gas. It would not idle, so a new (good used)OPR and a Good Used ICU and it idles like it should. It would not pass smaog, but I installed a new exhaust system this morning(it had the original OEM still in place at 183,000 miles.) and she passed smog some 30 minutes(and a short trip to heat up the new CAT)later. Well below average in all respects at both 15 and 25 MPH except NO and it is a bit high, but that might be the high flow CAT doing that . I really need to set the timing and have the mixture checked as it might be running a bit rich. however the spark plugs (new) all have a wonderful light tan look like they should.
