Question Groaning Steering Wheel - Please Help

Hi All,

I recently encountered a problem with the steering wheel of my 1991 560 SEC. The steering wheel "Groans" no matter which way I turn it and no matter where the tire position is. The groaning is specially louder when it is cold outside and when I turn at low speeds like a 3-point turn.

I checked for leaks and there are none. My Hydraulic Fluid level is at half of the container level which makes me wonder if the groaning is a Steering problem or a Hydraulic Suspension problem due to low hydraulic fluid level.

I have not take the car to a mechanic as yet, because I want to get an initial idea of the problem.

Can someone help? If you guys suggest to replace the hydraulic fluid, can I do it on my own? Or does a mechanic have to do it?

Thanks in advance.
Imran
