scanner for 500E

I have read through many threads with regard to scanners for MB, but it seems that most of the users have newer cars. For my '92 500E, are the OBDII and Snap-On MT2500 too new? I could use my Sony Vaio laptop (3 years old), but would prefer a completely hand-held unit, unless the price difference is significant, such as ten times. My local mechanic only has experience with a unit that was several thousand dollars, and the MB dealer is no help at all, because they probably don't want the potential liability of a customer screwing up the electronics of a car on the dealer's recommendation.

Right now I am chasing an EGR problem which keeps kicking on the check engine light, and I hate paying $50 to $70 to reset it every time I try something. Further, my independent mechanic and the local MB dealer have also stated that this problem sometimes takes several trys to cure.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
