Help, help, unhappy wife.
This week the weather has been hovering about - 5 to - 10 around here.
My wife got home tonight & told me, for the second time this week, after having the car sit outside her work all day, the heater fan does not come on, until she is about 5 or 6 miles down the road. I checked fuse # 29 ( blower motor ), and the only thing I noticed was, the blade on one side of the fuse seemed to just barely catch the terminal. I squeezed the terminal slightly & re-inserted the fuse ( 30 A ). Tried the blower & it worked, although that was after having the car sit in my heated garage for 2 hours. Any thoughts or experiences on this.

If it is like the W123, 300D, which I would bet a six pack of beer that it is, the climate control heat is interlocked not to come on until the coolant temperature is at a certain point (hot). Can't tell you what that temperature is but mine will start blowing when I'm less than a mile from the house.

I don't have climate control, just a straight, simple heater/a.c..
Would the same still apply ?

You're probably going to have to check the owner's manual to be sure, put I think Jim's got it right. My 22 year old SD won't start the blower fan until the coolant temp gets to 40 degrees C to avoid that cold blast of air. MB considers it a feature, and so do I.

Be a man, Manny, and tell her to wear warmer clothes. Oops, sorry, suggest that point to her is the kindest possible terms, perhaps even buying some of those warmer clothes at the most expensive retailer in your area.

No blower
Just have her crank up about 10 minutes before leaving. Might save a headgasket. Diesels don't like to be run cold.
P.S. Mine does the same. I think it's around 40 to 50 C or 100 to 120 F whichever you prefer. |

Manny that is funny. But it also shows that you have a good understanding of the situation. Do what you have to do to get that heater working in the car and your wife smiling. Nothing worse than to have the heater go bad in the house/bedroom, talking about a freeze Blue :p |

No blower
My mistake, Manny. I didn't pay attention to the type. I've had all diesels and I just took for granted yours was diesel. I've been burning diesel fuel since 1963 and wouldn't have it any other way.

My suggestion would be to check the engine coolant thermostat for proper operation. Even though your wife's car does not have automatic climate control, it might still have an interlock between the engine temperature and the blower motor.

I too would guess that it waits until the heat warms a bit. My 92 Buick (although it has climate control) will not turn the fan on, until the temperature gets closer to what my setting is on.
