With my AC working, I am on to my next challenge, a pronounced and somewhat hollow "clunk" from the right rear of the car on any sort of surface irregularity (pothole, manhole cover, etc.)

The shocks are new, and correctly installed. No missing bushings or loose bolts or other pieces.

The ontly thing that I could find was that the large bushing where the whole subframe attaches to the frame at the front of the wheelwell appears to be more worn on the right side than on the left.

Suggestions as to problem, or areas to check further? Thanks.

Chuck, things that go clunk in the night that are associated with independent rear suspensions almost always wear out more on the torque loaded side of the final drive. In the case of our common W124, it's the right. Having said that, remember that the diff and subframe are unsprung weight and a "clunk" associated with road surface irregularities is more likely to be a bushing on one of control arms or locator struts.
