Alternative method to remove fan on m104?
Is there a way to remove the fan on my engine without the special tool? I'm wondering you can use a strap wrench on the pulley to hold the fan.
Secondly, does anyone know what the fan bolt needs to be torqued to? Thanks, GregS '84 300D, 180k '90 300CE, 171k |

o.k., I found this thread which says you can use a bent rod to hold the pulley in place:

I forget the exact tool that works. You may try a long handled allen wrench that fits in that area. It's difficult to see that area, an inspection mirror may help.

I did that!
I had to remove the fan on the 104 in my sl320. I removed the belt and then took one of those belt wrenches around the pulley that I got from Pep Boys for 9.99. I then took an allen wrench, I think 4mm, and used an open end jack handle over the end to give more torque. The belt wrench will sit against another pulley and you can give it some torque. I would recommend taking your time and removing the radiator because it is a tight area. This fan was a pain! It took me more time to remove it than anything else. Good luck.

I needed the special tool to get my clutch off. Others have fashioned a tool and were successful. The tool is about 3/16" metal wire, so kinda beefy. If your bolt is in there solid, it takes a bit of torque to break it loose. My friend was able to muscle his off by holding the pulley. His bolt was not that tight. He bought the tool (the one I borrowed!) but was unable to get it to work. I had to fiddle with it for quite awhile until it finally seated and I was able to apply torque. It is tricky if you have never done it before. Hard to describe. The tool is not that expensive and does work well.

I made an m104 fan clutch holder tool with a length of 3/16" (I think) steel rod purchased at Home Depot. Used a bench vise to bend it, a hacksaw to cut. Total cost - $1.99, total time - 5 minutes.
I've not had any problem removing the 8mm allen head bolt securing the clutch to pulley using just a plain 'ol allen key. Some folks have reported using a cheater pipe on an allen key to generate enough force to break the bolt free. The strap wrench will work just fine, but I think the tool costs more than most of the other options. - JimY |
