S600 recommended oil weights+some other questions.

Quick question what summer weight say above 50 degrees do you recommend for an S600? The oil will be M1. I think 10w-30 is in there now.
Also when should the timeing chain be done?
One more, did they have the 4spd or 5spd transmission in 1995? What fluid should be used.

Thanks

Use 0w-40 or 15w-50, do not use 10w-30.

Found the 722.6 introduction timeline
OK, here's the info on when the 722.6 was introduced:
*from 03/95 in the C140 with engine M120 (S600 Coupe)
*from 09/95 in the W/V 140 with engines M119 and M120 (S500 and S600 sedans, long and short wheelbase)
*from 09/95 in the R129 with engines M119 and M120 (SL500 and SL600)
*from 01/96 in the W210 with engine M119 (E420)
*from 08/96 for all MB passenger cars with 4,5, or 6 cylinder engines.
Gilly

(This was a copy and paste from an earlier post of mine)

The answer on the transmission, as you can see, depends on if it's a S600 coupe or sedan. If it's a sedan, a 95 would definitely have the 722.3 4 speed tranny. A S600 coupe in 95, if it was produced after 3/95 would be the 5 speed 722.6, before 3/95 would be the 4 speed 722.3.

In regards to daddiojiggies post, the info on the S320 is incorrect, all 140 chassis with the M104 inline 6 had a 5 speed transmission. Initially it was the 722.5 5 speed, then in 8/96 it changed to the 722.6 5 speed transmission. Same with the 6 cylinder SL.

Thanks Gilly it's a sedan. I gues than its not one of those stupid "sealed for life" transmissions. It just had its 60k service according to my friend so I guess they would have changed that.

I only consider the 722.6 transmissions stupid only if you keep it sealed for life. I serviced mine at 80K miles and consider the 722.6 transmissions the best I have ever driven.

I consider the FSS vehicles stupid if you wait until the computer tells you that your due for an oil change.

My belief is that if you over maintain a car (frequent fluid and filter changes) then the body will fall apart before you ever need to replace the transmission or engine. My approach has worked on my two previous cars.

Yes, my 722.6 is "recommended" to be sealed for life by MB.

However, it has a replaceable filter, and drain plugs on both the pan and torque converter. I had my fluid changed at 70k miles. So far, so good.
