FERDMAN: i am having a hard time inserting my key to the ignition.

question: is this a sign for me to replace the tumbler?
if so, is this a "universal" tumbler that fits all?
can i replace this myself, or do i need a techie?

thanks.

Joel, that's the problem I was having before I replaced the ignition tumbler/lock cylinder in our 1992 300CE. You need to take your registration card/proof of ownership to a MB dealer and the Service Department can order a replacement ignition tumbler. I replaced it myself after I made the release wire to MB specs. MB dealers sell the release wire if you're not confident about making one yourself. Like most DIY jobs it's quite simple after you do it once ... it takes a certain touch to release the detents so that the tumbler pulls out.

Fred, thanks for your reply. I already found the two release holes at the face of the ignition. Once, the tumbler comes out is it just a matter of shoving in the new tumbler or does is require further work?

Sorry for the stupid question, since I do not have any clue on what to expect!

Joel, first remove the trim piece around the cylinder lock ... assuming you have a 124 car. On the 124 cars there's a black barrel over the cylinder lock that comes off with the cylinder lock when you release it. Remove the old cylinder lock from the barrel, insert the new cylinder lock in the barrel and reinstall. As I mentioned it's quite simple when you've done it once ... the experience factor.

Joel, for information on fabricating the release wire do a "Search" under 'cylinder lock'. Read the thread titled 'Ignition Lock Broken - Help Needed'. Scroll down until you see the illustration of the release wire and a picture of the cylinder lock and barrel after removal. There are detailed instructions which clearly explain the removal process.

Hi All,

Got mine to turn one more time using a jigsaw someone else had suggested on this site. Pushing the handle of the jigsaw against the key, and using a wrench to turn the key ,vibrations did it!!! try it. It pulled out in 30 secs with tool I made. New tumbler in a couple days.

Thanks Gilly for the detailed back door instructions anyway!

Thanks,Jeff

If your lock set up is the same as mine (and make sure it is) then you'll want to see this:
