Howdie,
First of all, I know that M103 engines do have some oil consumption problems. My car has been burning oil since about 60k at about 1qt/1k. Lately, it is worst at about every 600miles/qt. Visually, there is no oil under the car with minor seppage on from front of engine. My question is what should I do first? Go with new valve stem seal or valve guide or both. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated. Car runs flawlessly and would like to keep it for another 100k. -Larry -92 190E Sportline -8 hole alloy w/ SP5000 -Euro lights/clear indicators |

My 300E had the valve seals only, at least they showed up as being changed in the records. The car was using ZERO oil between changes before having other problems which were not the fault of the engine.
Replace the seals with the good V/G seals available from the parts shop and watch your oil consumption improve drastically. Good luck, ------------------ Larry Bible '84 Euro 240D, 523K miles '88 300E 5 Speed '81 300D Daughter's Car Over 800,000 miles in Mercedes automobiles |

I don't really know, it is several hours labor, very little in parts cost.

Just had mine done at a cost of approx $300 labor + a few dollars in parts.
