I've got a problem I'd like get some information on before I take my car to the shop for costly repairs.

I've got a 1992 190E 2.6 that is leaking coolant from an outlet next to the transmission. (underneath, sandwiched between the transmission and transmission hump)

It's not a bad leak, but I have to top the overflow 2 or 3 times a week. I've noticed that the overflow spilloff goes down into the passengers side fender, so I don't think it's coming from there. (I could be wrong).

What are the possible components causing my leak?

Many times it is the heater control valve. It is located under the black grate just under the windscreen.

Thanks Benzmac. Does this affect how the heater works? Because I'm getting great heat, and I don't smell that anti-freeze smell.

Also, is it difficult to replace the heater control valve? I'm not a mechanic, but I've done some fairly complex stuff (rebuilds, brakes, rearends, etc...)

Well, I don't have to figure out whether it's difficult or not. I was on my way down GA 400 this afternoon, and the Heater Control Valve started spewing.

So, I had to do an emergency roadside patch job. A friend of mine came by and we went to a parts store and picked up a "bypass" pipe. Slapped that puppy on, and wen't on down the road.

I've ordered the replacement valve ..from you of course.. (because Lee is my new best buddy), and it should arrive in a couple of days.

What is considered a hot engine on the temp guage? In downtown Atlanta traffic, I regularly reach 100 deg celsius.
