Unhappy 190e running hot

hello,
I have a 1989 190e that is ruuning hot in traffic, on the highway it runs at 80C, but if i get stuck in traffic it goes over the 100C mark. It appears the two fans in front of the radiator have stopped turning on. I have tried changing the fuses, any other ideas what to check?
thanks

If the fans aren't coming on, first confirm that the fans are in operating condition; then work backwards, like the temp sensors, etc.

Is the fan clutch functioning as it should? The coolant temp cut in for the aux fans is very high, somewhere in the neighborhood of 110C or so.

Thanks for the replies. The fans were working last month, i remember hearing them come on. Haven't heard them since. A few days ago, let the car run in my garage, it heated up beyond 100 and the fans did not come on. The next morning i noticed a good amount of coolant on the ground, it apears the coolant came out of the overflow tube. The coolant level seems to be fine though, same a it was. The thermastat, water pump, coolant hoses and OVP relay were replaced in the last month.

The fan between the engine and radiator is working. Could this be the Auxiliary Fan Relay? does anyone know where this is located on the 190e 2.6?

The relay is located in the aux fuse box just foward of the main fuse box. it's under a plastic cover and it should be the only relay in there. make shure when you change it you put in the newer style relay with the fuse in it.(the new one should be orange)

Check your fan switch

overheating troubleshooting 84 190E

bear in mind it cuts in a little over 100, like 105. You can test the rest of the system by faking a fan switch cut in.

To do so, locate fan switch (see link) and pull the plug off the top. Then, short the two wires in the plug (female). It should start up. This is a very simple way to see if the fan is actually working.

Done with engine running, obviously.

Thanks again for everyones replies. I looked on fastlane and could not find a Auxiliary Fan Relay or Auxiliary Fan Switch for the 1989 190e 2.6. Any ideas were i can find this or if this model even has these parts? I did find an Auxiliary Fan Resistor.

On the 102 engine (4cyl) the main fan is an electro magnectic fan triggered by the switch.

On the 103 engine you have a regular fan clutch. The auxiliary fan kicks in at about 107 and may also kick in if the A/C is on and the A/C pressure is high.
I would check my coolant temperature sensor. Here is a great thread for you to read...

Aux fan not coming on, relays look good, what to check next?
Although they are talking about the 104 I think you can get the idea.
Good luck!

Cool Harness!!!

My 1990 2.6 190E was running hot under the same conditions as yours, not so long ago! Followed some of the postings here, tested my coolant switch (shorted with screwdriver while running procedure I used is below) It worked fine, sent signal to the RELAY. Next was the relay, bingo it was bad/OEM Circa 1990( when I shorted the coolant switch the relay clicked but NO HIGH SPEED FANS)! Got a new one $28.00 w/fuse worked and the fans came on at 107 DEGREES, GREAT! Here is the best part, after reading a post on in this forum come to find out a fella here sells a COOL HARNESS/plug and it fits right on top the coolant switch, it kicks my highspeed fans on at 92 degrees!! I live in LAS VEGAS the DESERT and it runs Coooool as the winter at around 80-90in all HOT 100+ weather and traffic.
HERE IS THE LINK:

Nice guy to deal with, sends instructions, its made with OEM MERCEDES plugs and has a 90 day warranty. Hope this helps!

I only hope it will work on my 1995 C280?????

Cool

Forgot the procedure....here it is.

I slipped the plug halfway off the COOLANT SWITCH and placed a screwdriver between the newly exposed plug contacts, if the HIGH SPEED FANS come on the relay is working and most likely the coolant switch is not.
My relay just clicked, which "appeared to me to be working" but if it had been working correctly the fans would have come on since I was now acting as the coolant relay by shorting the circut with the screwdriver. Since they did not come on, the next best suspect was the relay it's self.

Note: I knew my AUX FANS worked because they both came on when I put my AC on, although they were slow but they came on.. which made me a happy camper..

This was my line of thinking anyway... No expert here it just worked for my situation!!!! all I can say is Coooool Harness

Good luck!

the coolant switch/sensor on my car (1990 2.6 190E 6cyl) is in the top center between the valve cover(left) and the air filter assy(right), its right there in the the block. Visually, It should have a BLACK top(plug) with(2) wires coming out and a BLUE body which is the sensor. slide the plug UP a little (car running) w/o fully taking it off, then place a screwdriver between the contacts (shorting) if the high speed AUX FANS do not come on as they should, the coolant sensor is BAD (cheap fix) If there is a clicking noise to your upper right and NO fans come on (as in my case), the AUX FAN RELAY is bad (another cheap fix). NOTE:If you don't have the relay with the fuse in it you should replace it anyway, the one in there is out of date!

I guess in some instances BOTH could be bad, But for me that is where I started and it was great advise I got right from HERE.The folks here saved me a lot of money by doing just what I am with you. I found my answers by SEARCHING KEY WORDS, they will help 90% of the time! not doing so could get you no answers to really common questions(it happend to me once )

At any rate check your relay in the FUSE BOX in the upper right hand section of your 190E (under the hood) in my car there are 2 fuses boxes(one had ceramic fuses(upper) the other relays(lower). While standing in the grill/radiator area and reaching HIGH right the fuse box closest to you is the one contaning the relays.

If you go to the link I placed above there is a picture of what your looking for. Here it is exactly as shown on the COOLHARNESS SITE

http://pages.prodigy.net/jforgione/MB_CTS.html

Hope I helped a bit!!!

thanks i found the coolant switch and shorted it. The fans did come on so i guess the coolant switch is bad. Only other thing of note is the the plastic on the plug that connects to the coolant switch has broken off the top. Maybe it is just the coonector that is bad.
thanks again for your help
