Lifting a w126

I tried the search button. but couldn't find what I was looking for.

I would like to know whats the proper way to lift my car, a w126 chassis SEL sedan. I have a carport in the back of the house and the concrete is leveled. What sort of equipement would I need to lift the car... say, 2 ft? so I could go under and do inspections and repairs if needed? I am essentially messing with a large S-class mercedes, and am afraid that if I don't lift it properly, I am risking my life by going underneath. Thats why I am asking for proper ways and equipment to do this. Thanks in advance.

owners manual

In my owner's manual, there is a section on how to lift the car. Have you checked you owner's manual? I think it may also be on the service CD.

For a 420 SEL, if I recall correctly, for the front it recommends the engine cross brace, and for the rear, the differential, in addition to the four rubber pad jack points on the frame. I heard some member may have damaged their car by lifting on the rear differential, so if you try searching on "differential lifting", you may find some details. Also, depending on what you are doing, maybe drive-up ramps will be ok. But please don't trust your life to my memory.

I lift the front by the crossmember and the rear by the diff. I set the car on jacks under the rubber pads inboard of the jack holes. I haven't had one drop on me yet.

Someone said that you shouldn't lift the car by the diff.

My 87 SDL manual says nothing about lifting the car by the crossmember or the diff, likewise nothing about not lifting the car by the diff but maybe that's going too far. I'll check again. Maybe some pages got stuck together. I didn't see anything about lifting in the CD manual.

My manual doesn't say anything about lifting.
I found an old thread.. had to reword my "search entry" that covers what I am asking. However, I am not sure what else I would need.

Lets see..
4 ramps and 4- 3ton jack stands?
