400E Sunroof Problem

I have a low mileage 93 400E that has developed a sunroof problem. It has gotten sluggish and now will not flip up unless you give it a little push upward with your hand while pushing the button. It seems to slide open and close O.K. You can hear the motor running like it is trying to raise it up. I am experienced in doing my own work with BMW's I have owned but the Benz is new to me. I don't even know where the motor for the sunroof is located.

Also, the backup lights do not work (the bulbs are o.k.). Is this normally the reverse switch on the tranny and is it difficult to replace? I have observed this is not an easy car to work on (compared to my 735 Bimmer), but it sure is fun to drive. Thank you all for any help you can provide which will point me in the right direction.

Garry

the sunroof motor is located in the trunk on the left hand side behind where the hinge is. you will need to pull away that material to see it.

Thanks. I found the problem. It was simply a matter of turning the nut on the drive motor clutch a few degrees to stop the slippage.

I do still need advice on the other problem (backup lights do not work and the bulbs and socket connections are good). Does this generally mean I have a bad reverse switch? My MB service CD does not go into that and how difficult is it to locate and remove? Thanks.

Generally,

The slow-down is because of additional friction. Instead of increasing the slip-clutch preload, try *cleaning and greasing* the sunroof slides with MB slid paste.
