Looking for Benz from 1990-1993. Any of the larger models (400's or 500's)
Just started looking, but have settled on the years from 1990-1993... looks like what I can afford.

Any ideas on things I should avoid? What was the best and worst of these years/models?

Thanks for the help.

You may want to narrow your model year, the S class changed body style on 92, the 126 run from 1981-1991. For model year 90-91 the model include 300SE, 300SEL, 420SEL, 560SEL. For model year 92-93(140), the model include 300SE, 400SE (92), 400SEL (93), and 500SEL. Not to mention there are diesel model offer on both the 126 and 140.

I like both the 126 and 140, for reliably, the 126 is cheaper to maintain. There are many related posts on this forum on either models.

Hi! And thanks for the post!
I am pretty sure I am going toward a 92-93, most likely the 400's...
I am looking at a 92 400SE With about 75K on the clock.
Any 'things' I should be made aware of? I've heard electronics are problem?

What is your experience tell you about these?

Thanks again for the reply!

Pete

In colder weather, is there a way to tell if this is a problem?

The only different with the 92-400 and the 93-400 is the later model is long wheel base. There are many problems with the 140, here are some example:

Front suspension recalls on the 92-93 model, I believe most of them has been upgrade. Expect to replace tires more often.

A/C evaporator, add dye into the A/C, and check for leak at the evaporator drain hoses under the car.

Check for doors and truck assist motor.

If you like the body style, buy it. Be sure you get a car with Star Mark. Any or all of the above repairs can and will happen on your car. Additional, the windows regulators break, seat belts cause the SRS light turn on for 2-3 minutes, O2 sensors fail, the lists go on and on.

I don’t want you to feel I am trying to discourage your decision, My 95-S320V have all the above problems. I still think the 140 is the best built automobile.
