Nevermind. I found that the free loaner/rental from AutoZone works acceptably well on the M103 engine. The tool is junk, really, but for a 1-time free use I can't complain. Photos below. Not a fun job... took me a solid 3.5 hours and that was working as fast as possible. Worse yet, the old seals weren't old... they had been replaced in the past, and were the correct OE/dealer Viton seals. I don't know how old they are but they weren't hardened or crusty. Guess I'll have to wait and see if the new OE/dealer seals make any difference or not (was 500-600 miles per quart).

Full details plus some tips, more photos, etc are in this thread:

I have used one like that for years on all sorts of engines....however, I bought mine from K.D.Tools USA and it has hardened fingers....I modified mine slightly by removing the hand wheel and welding on a 13mm nut.

In the event the air line ruptures....turn the cylinder in question to TDC....this way the valve/s won't fall into the cylinder.

This will mean you have to hold up the chain while you rotate the motor.
I hang/support the cam chain sprocket from the cherry picker with a rubber bungy cord.

Always refit the towers with the lobes pointing away from the rocker arms or you'll pull the mounting threads in the head.

Do not start the engine for at least 30 minutes after fitting last tower, as hydraulic elements need to bleed down.

BTW....The #6 intake lobe ..........bad

This spring compressor didn't work for me...

How did you get out the keepers??? I tried this same spring compressor and it just pulled up the spring from the bottom. It didn't pull it up enough, though. I still couldn't push the spring down to get the keepers out. Any insights you can pass along would be much appreciated...

It's been 8+ years so I don't remember exactly... but, I think if you have compressed the spring and it's not dropping down away from the keepers, you will need to tap on the compressor tool to get the keepers freed up.

On a side note, I believe the new seals cut oil consumption in half... 500-600 miles per quart before, 1000-1200 miles per quart after with new seals. I sold the car in early 2007 with 217kmi and the next owner drove it to 295kmi before trading it in for something a bit newer in early 2012. To fully cure the oil consumption it would have needed new valve guides.
