The List Goes On -Heat Questions W115
Libby is slowly coming back to life. Let her run the other day till up to a good operating temp and then tried the heat. Good pressure in the radiator hoses, fan works well after contacts cleaned and lubed. Problem is no heat.
The PO disconected the AC and wondering if he bunged something up. Are the heat settings (upper levers full to outside) independent of the temperature sensor for the AC (which I have found)? I see three radiator lines going into the fire wall with a series of levers and assume I may have a problem here. BEFORE, I start taking it apart (at this rate, pretty soon all I will have left assembled will be the engine ) I would like to understand a little better how the system works, primarily if the AC disconnection has any effect on the heat system ( compressor is in the trunk disconnected ( why did'nt they just remove the belt??) I don't really see any vacuum pods, but I may just not be looking in the right place.

Removing the AC compressor shouldn't disable the heater on this car. AC-equipped cars actually have 2 separate blowers, one for the AC and one for the Heater. The only vacum control is a vacuum operated change-over switch under the dash, above the gas pedal, that selects the proper blower, depending on the position of the AC control knob in the center console. With the AC off, (full counter-clockwise I think) the AC blower should shut off and the heater blower should come on. With the engine running, look under the dash and see if the change-over switch cycles when you twist the AC knob back and forth. Also check that the red heater knobs are still moving the two levers on the underhood heater valve assy.
Happy Motoring, Mark

Thanks Mark, this has two blowers? Wow I can only see one, sits below the radio and below the ash tray. It is blowing fine. I can see the little levers moving the valves on the heater hoses, but I am not sure what is happening inside of them, may have to take them off to take a look. So as I understand you the posistion of the changeover valve will not affect temp of hot/cold only which blower works?
And if so and the valves are opening and closing then what else might be the culprit.....heater core????? does this have an in cabin thermostat or other temperature sensor? other ideas as always thanks

That's the AC blower, usually operated independently of the heater blower. The heater blower is visible through the cowl in the front of the car. Dunno how levers are setup on a 115, but on the 108, the top left lever turns the heater blower on. Full right = blower off and air passageway closed. First part on the left = passageway open, blower off. Then the blower's speeds, low medium and high to the far left.

The blower below the radio/ashtray is the AC blower. It recirculates cabin air through th AC evaporator core, but not the heater.
If the engine is running and AC knob full off, vacuum moves the change-over switch to disconnect the AC blower and connect the heat/defrost/fresh-air blower, which is located against the upper firewall and can be seen through the center dash air vent with a flashlight. Even if the heater cores are getting hot, if the heater/def blower is inoperative, you may get a little heat if the car is moving and none otherwise. So before condemning the heater hoses and cores, you'll need to figure out if the heater/def blower isn't working and why. Does the change-over switch move with the AC control? Is there vacuum to the AC control or the change-over switch? Is there power to the heater/def fan connector under the hood, on the firewall, near the power brake booster? It's also possible the heater/def blower is seized or dead. Happy Motoring, Mark

So the one that is working is the AC blower? and the heater blower is not, Once again , WOW , why would they do that ?? I am not sure I have tried to get it to work as I only saw one knob, center of dash that turns on this blower. If it was not so darn cold out I would go and fiddle around with it, I will work to see if I can get her to work. How do I effectively rule out the valve or fan. I mean if the valve does not work , that does not mean the fan will..I guess...I need to fiddle, thanks guys

That knob in the center of the dash is the FAN knob.
It's the AC CONTROL knob, down on the console near the radio, that switches from the AC blower to the heater/def blower. Once you set the AC control to select AC or heater mode, then the FAN knob switches on the related blower. Happy Motoring, Mark

sure sounds like a PIA to get to this fan to remove and repair, what other "cures" should I try or other checks to clear before I tear into it (that is if I decide to do it). Why did they build it this way???? My 126 is much easier, had fan out and brushes repaired and back in under 1.5 hours
I think I am still having fun

If all that I've already mentioned checks out OK, you could try to turn it on, then start it spinning with a long bit of clotheshanger through the center dash vent, otherwise you'll need to take out the fresh air grill under the wipers and try to reach under the water deflector and spin the fan.
Some say that Mercedes dangled the heater blower on a string and built this car around it. Do a search on what fun it might be to replace it! Happy Motoring, Mark

You should make sure that it actually has switched to the heater blower. The vacuum operated switch is on the left hand side of the console, connected to a cylinder above the accelerator pedal. Give the connecting rod a good tug down, to make certain that it is in correct position and the switch is making contact. Make sure the fuses are good too. Exhaust all possibities before you even think about going for that blower motor.

Wow, I think I will exhaust every and all solutions, and perhaps some creative solutions before I tackle that kind of repair. I wonder if anyone has ever retrofitted another type of fan over the heater core, mounted somehow through the cowl?

well the MB gods shined on me tonight, I took off the cowl, cleaned out years of crap, fiddled with the fan and sprayed some contact cleaner as best I could, then I helped the switch over valve and lo and behold the old fan started up, I was able to get significant changes in speed (3 levels?) and it pushed a lot of air! (well not a lot)
I then did a little lube by spraying and dabbing the top of the motor and she smoothed out. I am not sure if this can be lubed but I gave it a shot. thanks for all the help, check out my other threds, lots of good luck today
