Sounds like someone stuck an off-brand shoe in there because the MB parts are crazy expensive. You make have to suck it up and try the dealer, PN is 180 421 10 10.

You might be able to find some in a boneyard, try car-part.com and look for places that have 190s 200s or any other 110 body cars and see if they will sell you the shoes. Then you would at least have something you can get re-lined.

You may be right about the warped carb cover. After the car has run for a while the front carb is wet at the top. The housing screw hole in the rear was stripped and I added a nut to tighten it down. Still leaks.

I checked the pump and it does spurt fuel, although I don't know what weak vs. strong is.

The idle switch (hmm, so it controls trans mod pressure, eh) may be off, as I noticed the car wants to creep a little while starting. But that would not affect starting the engine per se, would it? It could account for the immediate stalling in forward, however.

Yes, a 250S/SE, a 280S/SE/SEL rear axle can be used. You will also need the brake proportioning valve and the master cyl off the donor car.

A rear end swap may be a good thing down the road. As luck would have it, there is a rotting 108 sitting in a front yard just a mile from my house. A rare thing since the houses out here are about a 1/2 mile apart.

I've been reading about the carburetor reconditioning and adjusting procedures on the Ponton site and I think I need some way of measuring RPM. What kind of device do I need to do this? Also, I noticed the indicator on the crank pulley is bent. Do I need to pull the plug, find TDC, and bend it back to be sure it is reading correctly?

I bought an RPM gauge at O'Reilly Auto Parts for $29.99. Bend the indicator back straight and it should be just fine...

A carburetor rebuild kits are not terribly expensive. I rebuilt my Solex carbs for $50 each. They are working flawlessly on a 2.8 liter engine.

W111 S-body Fintails got the twin Zeniths beginning about 63, but the short-body W110 230 stayed with the twin single-throat Solexes till '67, then it got the Zeniths.
You would need to swap in a whole W108 rear axle to convert to rear discs.
Can't imagine one wrong-size shoe, but sometimes the lining-lengths are different between the two shoes, or the thickness will wear unevemnly.
Can you post a picture?

These early automatics start out in second unless you floor it, or manually downshift - not my favorite feature!
That switch on the front carb controls a shift-control solenoid on the automatic tranny. So if your tranny is working more or less OK for now, try not to disturb it, or it's wiring too much.

Happy Motoring, Mark

Beautiful fintail Carpenterman!!!

I've got a nasty fintail virus as well, but I won't be able to purchase the cure until after I finish the projects on my current MBs. Those are my wife's terms and then she's OK with getting one.

I have it narrowed down to a w110, 111, or a 112.

This one is my dream car, but I'm pretty sure the cost will stand in my way:

Curious listing for Zenith carbs, as all W112s (and W109s) were originally fuel-injected.

Clueless ...

That seller has no idea of what cars those carbs will fit. And, they are the wrong ones for your 230 - yours should be the single throat.

I would urge you to think twice about changing out your rear end. I just finished swapping the one in my 280SL project and it is an awful job without a lift and the proper cradle to secure the piece.

9) Sounds like a hydraulic leak, usually in the steering gear box. Air mixes in at the leak spot & makes the fluid cloudy and take up more volume so some will spill out the top.

i have this problem on 108 .can it be rectified. i had replaced the pump.
