71 220d 115 steering gear box interchange
Hi All, The power steering box leaks pretty heavily. looks to be coming from the top. I got one from a 76 240D which the junk yard claims was a remove and replace!! i have it in hand and it doesn't look like it will work. the lines from the old one bolt to the top of the box and the new one bolt kinda to the front. Can this work or do i send it back? Also is there an interchange in years for this vehicle. There is really no play in the stearing it just leaks . Can this be removed and simply resealed . I am an average DYI'er no way a master mechanic.
Thanks!! john p |

The W114/W115 box bolts to the frame (so to speak). If these 3 mounts are the same, and I think they are, then grab the hoses from the donor car and use them. Look inside the left front wheel opening toward the rear to see the mounting bolts.
If you need hoses, you can have them remade at a hydraulic shop with the appropriate PS box ends. I think the return line is a simple low pressure line held with hose clamps, so only the high pressure line would require a professional replacement. The PS pump should be in the same location on both engines. Jim

W114/W115 and W116 interchange but that 1976 240D would be a W123 wouldn't it? If so,the answer is NO, it will not fit.

mercmad is correct , plus why mess with "making' somthing work? These are available after market in the rebuilt state as well as pick n pull. major work to do one of these so make sure the one you put in does not leak!

Hi guys. I see the benefit of a rebuilt. My first thought was to reseal. Only leak i see is coming out of the top of the box, around this 1" round disc. Not sure how big a job this type box is to work on.
I am able to nicely see the bolts from the fender well. i measured as close to center for each of them and compared the new unit. they are dead on. i also measured the arm and again it looks good. From what i can see of the knuckle, it too looks to be the same setup. There is enough hose on my high side to adjust to the new location. mercmad/meltedpanda what are your concerns , so i can cover all angles!! jp |

just make sure the one you are putting in is in good shape, and if it has not been rebuilt there is no way to tell but to try it. that said the R/R on this is a big job, much more than the three bolts you are looking at, and is best done on a lift ( ask me how I know) I for one would want to make sure the unit you are using to replace is a good one. I would not want to do the job twice

Update from the steering box project. Car is at my mechanics, he just called and said the box with my lines will not work. Steering Box will go in but there is no room to accept my hoses. The original box has the lines coming in on the top the box . The lines from the 76 240D come in from the front. i have not seen it yet but he said the line would have to bend immediatley in order for it to work. So i called the bone yard to see if they still have the hoses. Not giving up yet!!!
