Thats problem with the 170 (besides the excessive prices asked by vendors for used parts ) is the body is full of piles of wood. That is OK if you know how to work the stuff and have access to Ash or Oak .

Is ash or oak a problem down under then? I could imagine with different animals (so to speak) you'd also have different trees...

Yes, because it has to be imported. No oak or ash grows here only gum trees

Wouldn't those make a sort of crumple zone in case of an accident?
Panels should bounce right back into place!

Regarding the forum you linked, looks like we have to sign up to view the pics. I have so many forums I'm a member of just to see a few images. lol

170V were a good seller in Australia in the post war years. Remarkable considering Australia and New Zealand lost a generation of young men in WW2 and German and Japanese products were looked at askance .
But in OZ,Termites ate the wood out of cars and many old Chevs etc dissapeared years ago because of this.
170's were no different and today the survivors are highly prized by their owners. In 1951 a couple of adventurous types type a 170 Diesel from brisbane to Cairns and back at 35MPG .. So what ,you ask? .Well even today such a drive takes two days at 60 MPH. in those days there wasn't even a road....

I didn't realise you had to register to see the pictures - why do they do that? Is it something to do with server (in)capabilities?
