it's burl walnut and it has faded . if you look at a part which was protected from sunlight (as opposed to cooking under a hot sun) you will see the shade it was originally.
The base wood is rosewood with a microthin layer of walnut burl over the top. I love the burl fisnish and in my 6.3 it has nice age to it. (I wont use the "P" word ha ha ha) Google Drew Tibkin, he is The Man when it comes to mercedes wood resto in the USA. If you are going to pay someone to repair it,you would be ahead of the game by talking to Drew. |

The dash face matches the piece I showed you exactly, and there's no darkening of the wood anywhere under where the escutcheons or the dash pads were.

Tram,
I can't be positive without looking at better photos but my guess is carpathian elm burl that has been chemically bleached or very sun faded. You can see this veneer in early jag XJS's. |

Two types of finish were available for W111, bakelite and wood venneer.
The veneer was offered in three main types : maccasser /mahogany . walnut . burled walnut. There are several different colors and the burl can be found in three different shades. I have never heard of Ash or Maple veneer being used in any W111 mercedes although the base for the bow is supposed to have been made of ash to prevent moisture damage . The above reply is why I reccomend Drew Tibkin to anyone contemplating a resto of their wood. He has forgotten more about this subject than many will ever know. The color simply depended on what color stain was used . |
